chessbazaar and our carvers pay our sincerest appreciation to the courage and valor of all the forces of the Sikh Empire who stood tall and showed ultimate resilience against fleeing for the motherland and against injustice. Learn more about the Sikh Empire.

Sikh Empire : The Sikh Empire aka Khalsa Raaj was founded from 1799 to 1849 in the undivided Indian subcontinent of Punjab, which is now part of India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. The seeds of the Sikh Empire were sown in 1699 in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, India by the then tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, against the injustice and cruelty of the Mughal Empire in India.

Dal Khalsa Period and the Empire: In August 1708, Guru Gobind Singh rechristened Banda Singh Bahadur of Madho Das and ordered him to reconquer the Punjab region from the clutches of the Mughals. He was captured in 1716, along with his 700 men and his 5-year-old son, while defending his fort, and was ambushed and executed after refusing to convert to Islam. The period from 1716 to 1799 was a highly turbulent time due to the absence of leadership politically and militarily in the Punjab region. The vacuum was filled by the Sikh Misls (caste) united by Maharaja Ranjt Singh. The empire's main geographical footprint stretched from the Punjab region to the Khyber Pass in the west, to Kashmir in the north, Sindh in the south and Tibet in the east. In 1799, Ranjit Singh moved the capital of the Sikh Empire from Gujranwala to Lahore, Punjab (now Pakistan).

The population of the Khalsa Empire during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's first term in the 19th century was estimated at about 12 million people. The religious composition of this time is: Muslims 8.4 million, Hindus 2.88 million and Sikhs 722,000.

The Khanda : The inspiration for the Royal Cross comes from the double-edged sword of the Sikh religious symbol Khanda (not to be confused with the emblem of Iran). The word Khanda has its origins in the Sanskrit word khaḠga or khaá¹…ga, from a root khaṇá¸, meaning "to break, divide, cut, destroy". The King comes with two beautiful king finials (on each side) and stands proudly at 4.5 inches and its base is a sturdy 1.9 inches. Changing the king knobs is quick and easy. This is a luxury design depicting the magnificently robust and lone knight.

The Knight: The Knight is inspired by Maharaja Ranjit Singh's armored warrior horse Laili.

A work of art: Handcrafted in India by the Sikh carvers of Amritsar, whose ancestors were part of the Golden Era of the Punjab.

Our team of expert carvers put their hearts into the smallest little details of this chess set and have worked closely together to bring these chess pieces as close to history as possible. The result of this hard work by these master craftsmen is a truly wonderful design and a masterpiece that every connoisseur will admire.
